Many
Great Groups With Many Great Songs!!!
It's truly amazing how many great groups came out
of the late 50s through the mid 60s. Yet, so many of them played
an important role in making the music that made the world turn 'round!
No, The Beatles were just ripe for the time--and I really think
America's dj's were caught up in the Beetlemania that swept The
States in the early 6os. It was just timing, because if The Beatles
didn't happen, someone else would. Could this thing we called "DOOWOP'
go on forever? To all the baby boomers out there--we probably wish
it would have. It was an easier time-most of us were in school,
still under the roofs of our parents with not a worry in the world--except
if you were a guy of draft age! I loved the era. Songs that had
real meaning, tied together with distinct melodies and lyrics. The
songs told a story, usually about a guy's love for his girl and
a girl for her guy. The winds of change swept us away, the music
died, and today, all we have are the memories of our GOLDEN YEARS-our
Teenage Years. For those years, were truly the greatest.
Alan
Freed coined the phrase "Rock and Roll" for the music
that could be heard on every car and transistor radio during the
"fabulous fifties". The inception of "Rock and Roll"
brought with it hope for many teenagers who had a dream of becoming
the next Frankie Lymon or Dion.
While the
parks in Brooklyn were filled with those trying to emulate "Willie,
Mickey and the Duke", in Bensonhurst you could hear a group
of teenagers who called themselves The Overons singing on the
street corners all night long. Because they were too many in number,
three groups emerged: The Mystics, The Passions and The Classics.
The three
groups were bonded by friendship and a promise of lasting unity.
In 1959, The Mystics were the first group to receive a record
contract and went on to record their million selling hit "Hushabye".
True to their promise, the Mystics introduced The Passions to
their manager, Jim Gribble. The Passions' first record "Just
To Be With You" went right to the top of the charts. It was
another million seller for these Brooklyn friends. Could lightning
strike a third time? Well, once again The Mystics and The Passions
honored their promise by having an audition set up for The Classics.
The Classics recorded "Till Then" and it zoomed to the
top of the charts, and another million records were sold. Lightning
did strike three times for these young Brooklyn friends.
Over the
past forty years the three groups have remained close friends,
often working in each others groups. In 1989, the three groups
were asked to perform their 30 Year Reunion at Radio City Music
Hall. The show received a fabulous response and since then they
have continued to perform The Brooklyn Reunion Show to rave reviews.
The Reunion
Show consists of each group performing selected material and highlights
from their individual shows. They then join each other as one
group, sharing their experiences and songs with the audience.
The show is sprinkled with the type of humor that can only come
from lifelong friendships. They close with a heartwarming finale
and leave the stage with the audience standing, cheering and dancing
in the aisles.
